Supervision Exemption

Anyone born on or after September 1, 1993 must pass an official TPWD-approved boater safety course to operate motorboats over 15 HP or sailboats over 14 feet.

Operators must carry valid government photo identification and their official Texas Boater Education Certificate whenever driving a vessel in public state waters.

Uncertified operators may legally drive if directly accompanied by an adult age 18 or older who is legally qualified or exempt to operate the vessel.

A wearable Coast Guard approved PFD is required for every person on board. Children under 13 must wear a jacket at all times while underway.

Texas law mandates using an engine cut-off lanyard connected to the operator when running motorized craft under 26 feet above headway speed.

Always maintain slow headway speed within 50 feet of shorelines, docks, swimmers, or stationary vessels in channels and marina basins.
